Digital Retinal Camera

Have you ever wondered what see when we look inside your eyes? Until recently, we could describe it to you, we could write down a detailed description, but we didn’t have a means of reliably, instantly showing you the back of your eyes (the retinas). Now we do.
Our new digital retinal camera can take instant, digital photographs of your retinas. In younger patients, we can usually do it without dilating your pupils. Older patients will need to have their pupils dilated before photos can be taken. In either case, we can show you the results at the time of your examination, and discuss your findings with you. With these baseline photos, we can document what your retinas look like now. During future exams, we can review the photos can compare them with the eyes at that time. This should enable us to better detect subtle changes, finding problems earlier.
What kinds of problems show up in these photographs? We have seen retinal changes from diabetes, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, glaucoma suspicion, arterial blockage (a “stroke” of part of the retina), and many other abnormalities. Not only do we now have an accurate record of these problems, but the patients have been able to see them graphically displayed as well. This has taken patient education to the next level.
Feedback from patients has been consistently and enthusiastically positive. We feel the digital retinal camera is a tremendous addition to the examination we provide.
